“Sometimes I’m a professional big wave surfer – others a plumber and a lifeguard”
If you need a plumber you need one who knows something about pipes...Andrew Cotton has been surfing since he was seven having first entered the water as a child to help with asthma. He worked in a surfboard factory until, at twenty-five, re-training as a plumber. He works hard all summer long to be able to chase waves all over the world but always keeping a balance for time with his family. Originally from Plymouth but now based in Croyde, North Devon with his wife Katie and their two children Honey and Ace.
Now “Cotty” surfs some of the biggest waves the Ocean has to offer. Already known for towing fellow surfer Garrett McNamara into the Guinness Book of Records for riding the biggest confirmed wave, Andrew has gone on to surf big waves of his own which have sparked debate as to whether they were bigger than the record.
Andrew is very aware of the safety aspects every time he rides a big wave.
"The bigger the wave, the faster they move, and you can get up to 40 mph. But unlike a car there isn't smooth tarmac -- it's like driving over a road riddled with potholes at that speed."
Earlier successes have included The Casio G Shock Spirit of Toughness Award 2012.
A true ambassador for British Surfing, he is a keen environmentalist helping to protect the waters and coastlines around the world from environmental damage.
